The NYPL Digital Archives

For each of our multimedia projects, Storyhouse offers an additional service that contextualizes family stories — adding historical background information to your important dates and anecdotes. While researching photos though, we often come across the same problems surrounding citations and usage rights.
Earlier this year the New York Public Library opened their digital collections to the public, releasing more than 180,000 digitized items. The images are free of the usual administration fees and red tape that block archives from public use. Instead, it offers a wealth of resources with user friendly search tools and interfaces — perfect for “sharing, research, and reuse by scholars, artists, educators, technologists, publishers, and Internet users of all kinds.” Check out some of the photos we found using the search terms “Texas” and “Family Stories”.
