A few months back, Live Oak Legacies stumbled upon The Clarimont, an incredible retirement community in Central Texas where seniors are actively going green and giving back to their surrounding communities. We were particularly inspired by a program they initiated around Earth Day 2013 whereby the seniors wove plastic bags into mats for the homeless.
It was evident after one short conversation with their Oregon-based parent company, Sunshine Retirement Living, that this community was something special. Our film crew was graciously welcomed into their lovely facility and we were deeply moved by the kind-hearted residents who shared their stories with us.
The persistent theme among their stories is that treating every day like Earth Day by caring for their environment and surrounding communities, reminds them that they are part of a much larger movement. These seniors say they have forged strong bonds with fellow residents and have found purpose in participating in the recycling program and the community garden.
“We all care about our Earth, we all care about our homes, and we need to take care of what we have,” said Rita Giblin, who was featured in the video.
We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed filming it!
