Live Oak Legacies was created with the simple goal of helping people capture and preserve their loved ones’ stories, with the hope that these stories would be shared and bring generations closer together. As we work, we always keep an eye out for others who are bridging the gap between seniors and younger folks, and this week we would like to highlight an awesome event in Bernardsville, New Jersey.
In 2008 Bernards High School recognized the growing disconnect between seniors and younger people in its community, so the school organized and hosted its first Intergenerational Golden Prom to unite students and senior citizens in a night of dancing and story sharing. What a cool idea (and undoubtedly to an awesome soundtrack)!
May 2nd marks the 7th annual Golden Prom, and the event has grown to include gifts, door prizes and the crowning of a special prom king and queen.
According to a local news article, the Golden Prom is open to senior citizens from Bernardsville, Peapack-Gladstone, Far Hills and Bedminster, as well as those who are graduates of Bernards High School. If you or someone you will be attending this or a similar event this spring we’d love to hear about it!
Happy Good Friday! Put on your dancing shoes, it’s the weekend!
