Porch Stories on the Road - Aunt Anne

Maggie Hanna

Maggie O'Connell is a full-time teacher and part-time traveler who loves going on adventures with her husband Paul and their black lab Salvador. Guided by her Irish roots and her passion for storytelling, she stumbled upon Storyhouse and knew immediately that she wanted to contribute. While home over the holidays, she took some time to interview one of her aunts who took to the road after she lost her husband. This is Maggie’s first of (hopefully) many contributions to the Storyhouse on the Road series and we couldn’t be more delighted to have her on board.

Storyhouse Interviews First Teacher to Integrate Pease Elementary

Kathryn Gonzales

In December, Storyhouse interviewed Olyvia Green of Austin, Texas as part of a collaboration with Pease Elementary and the Austin Independent School District to honor her many contributions. Mrs. Green was the first teacher to integrate Pease in 1969 and taught there for 26 years. Storyhouse was stunned to learn that her story had not yet been captured and jumped at the opportunity to forever preserve her memories in the form of a Portrait Video. The interview will air on the AISD channel and Mrs. Green will be honored at an African American Heritage Month assembly where we will screen her Portrait Video. Mrs. Green's family and several historic centers will receive an edited version of her full interview for their family archives.

We'll keep you posted with updates as the project progresses!
